By 2047, India’s population is expected to reach 1.64 billion , with half of that - around 820 million people -
living in urban areas. As cities grow and urbanisation accelerates, the quality of life in many urban centres is
worsening, highlighting the urgent need for more inclusive and sustainable urban development.
Successive governments have attempted to address challenges around housing, health, sanitation, and
transportation. Yet, progress remains slow—deeply affecting the poor, migrants, women, and young people
who rely on city services.
U-CAN brings together people, communities, policymakers, and state agencies from Tier II and Tier III
Indian cities to collaboratively solve urban challenges—creating a safer, more inclusive, and more livable
urban experience.
About Us
We are a network of organisations committed to improving urban problem solving through collective working, a multisectoral systems approach and a commitment to citizen inclusion in the policy making process.
The development sector often relies on isolated impact approaches—seeking solutions housed within individual organizations. U-CAN takes a different path by bringing together people, communities, policymakers, and state agencies from Tier II and Tier III Indian cities. By creating a safe space for dialogue and problem-solving, U-CAN fosters stronger urban governance and a more inclusive, livable urban experience.
Our members play a pivotal role in shaping our collective efforts. By fostering a collaborative environment where ideas are shared and every voice is heard, we draw on the collective wisdom of our network to drive meaningful impact.
